GREATER CAIRO METRO – LINE NO. 4

Greater Cairo Metro Line 4 – Phase 1

The Greater Cairo Metro Line 4 was constructed in two phases and is designed to ultimately run from Hadaek El Ashgar Station in west Cairo to a station in New Cairo in east Cairo, south of the International Airport. The overall distance is approximately 43 km. Phase 1, which we completed, involved the western section, approximately 18.8 km in length, terminating at El Malek El Saleh with an extension to a “Turn-back Point” an additional 1.3 km east at El Fustat.

Engineering Work Completed for the Project:

  • Boreholes and Sampling:

    • Drilled 13 boreholes with continuous sampling using Mazier and Vibro-percussion techniques, with depths ranging from 30m to 52m.
    • Drilled 15 boreholes with continuous sampling using Mazier and Vibro-percussion techniques, with depths ranging from 30m to 50m.
    • Drilled 31 boreholes with continuous sampling using Mazier and Vibro-percussion techniques, with depths ranging from 25m to 55m.
    • Drilled three additional boreholes with continuous sampling using Mazier and Vibro-percussion techniques, with depths ranging from 30m to 36m.
  • SPT Boreholes:

    • Drilled three SPT boreholes to a depth of 35m.
    • Drilled 18 SPT boreholes with depths ranging from 15m to 55m.
    • Drilled 20 SPT boreholes with depths ranging from 15m to 36m.
  • Piezometer Installation:

    • Installed nine piezometers at depths ranging from 20m to 50m.
    • Installed seven piezometers at depths ranging from 16m to 50m.
    • Installed 24 piezometers at depths ranging from 15m to 52m.
    • Installed six piezometers at depths ranging from 15m to 20m.
  • Dilatometer (DMT) Tests:

    • Conducted four flat dilatometer (DMT) tests at depths ranging from 13m to 29m.
    • Conducted four flat dilatometer (DMT) tests at depths ranging from 13m to 19m.
    • Conducted eight flat dilatometer (DMT) tests at depths ranging from 13m to 25m.
  • Electric Cone Penetration (ECPT) Tests:

    • Conducted four Electric Cone Penetration (ECPT) tests at depths ranging from 13m to 30m.
    • Conducted four Electric Cone Penetration (ECPT) tests at depths ranging from 12m to 24m.
    • Conducted 12 Electric Cone Penetration (ECPT) tests with depths ranging from 15m to 32m.
    • Conducted five Electric Cone Penetration (ECPT) tests at depths ranging from 17m to 23m.

Instrumentation and Measurement Methods Applied:

  • Survey monuments, benchmarks, and displacement targets.
  • Casagrande piezometers.
  • Vibrating wire piezometers.
  • In-place inclinometers.
  • Manual inclinometers.
  • Pressure cells.
  • Strain gauges (surface and embedded).
